Festive Bach Sounds for the Fourth Advent in Bochum
The City Choir Bochum invites you on Sunday, December 20, 2026, to a special Advent concert in the Christ Church Bochum. The program features Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio with Cantatas I to III and VI – a musical highlight of the pre-Christmas season with choir, soloists, and members of the Bochum Symphony Orchestra.
Bach's Christmas Oratorio as a Resonating Christmas Narrative
As the first notes of Bach's Christmas Oratorio resonate through the nave, festive orchestration merges with powerful choral music and heartfelt spiritual sounds. Cantatas I to III and VI guide the audience through central scenes of the Christmas story, unfolding an impressive musical dramaturgy between jubilant choral pieces, solo arias, and finely illuminated chorales.
City Choir and Bochum Symphony Orchestra in Harmony
The City Choir Bochum shapes the concert together with members of the Bochum Symphony Orchestra. Dorothea Brandt will take the soprano part, Iris Marie Sojer sings the alto role, Gustavo Martín Sánchez will be featured as tenor, and David Pichlmaier will take the bass. The musical direction is by Mechthild Jaskulsky.
It is precisely the combination of choral precision, historically developed church music, and orchestral richness that makes this concert experience special. In the Christ Church, clear voices, warm string colors, and festive trumpet sounds meet a sacred acoustic that gives Bach's music its spatial depth.
Live Atmosphere in the Christ Church Bochum
The Christ Church – Church of Cultures is located at the Square of the European Promise, close to the Bochum Town Hall. The house of worship is known for its diverse cultural program and concert acoustics. During the Advent concert, a focused audience atmosphere arises: quiet moments of reflection alternate with radiant tutti and the festive highlights of the Christmas Oratorio.
A Musical Evening Between Tradition and Present
Bach's Christmas Oratorio is among the defining works of European church music. The performance by the City Choir Bochum brings this tradition to a vibrant concert evening that appeals to both connoisseurs of Baroque music and anyone wishing to start the Advent season with great choral music.
