The Masters of the Organ: A Sonorous Journey Through Time at the Bochum Organ Autumn
On Sunday, October 25, 2026, the Bochum Organ Autumn invites you to a special organ concert at St. Elisabeth Church in Bochum-Gerthe. Under the title The Masters of the Organ, Hyeju Jung presents a program featuring works by Johann Kaspar Kerll, Dietrich Buxtehude, Johann Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms, and her own compositions.
Between Baroque Splendor and Romantic Depth
The musical journey traverses several centuries of European organ history. Johann Kaspar Kerll represents the artful sound language of the 17th century, while Dietrich Buxtehude is considered one of the most important representatives of the North German organ school. His organ works combine contrapuntal precision with great expressive power.
Bach at the Center of Organ Music
Johann Sebastian Bach serves as a central reference point of the concert program. His organ music brings together complex polyphony, clear musical architecture, and an extraordinary emotional pull. Bach's connection to Buxtehude is one of the defining chapters of music history: as a young organist, Bach traveled to Lübeck to experience the famous master and learn from him.
Romantic Colors and Personal Sound Ideas
With Johannes Brahms, the concert evening opens to the sound world of Romanticism. His chorale preludes are among the significant works of Romantic organ music, relying on warm tone colors, inner tension, and finely balanced registration. The program is complemented by Hyeju Jung's own compositions, which combine historical sound language with her personal musical handwriting.
Hyeju Jung: Church Musician with an International Profile
Born in Seoul, Hyeju Jung studied composition and organ in her hometown as well as organ and organ improvisation at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Leipzig. She then completed a conducting degree at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg. Since 2024, she has been working as the coordinating church musician for the Propsteipfarrei St. Peter and Paul in Bochum, and since summer 2026 also in the Liebfrauen parish in Bochum. In addition, she is active as a lecturer and guest conductor across Europe.
Live Atmosphere in St. Elisabeth
The St. Elisabeth Church provides the ideal space for an intense concert experience. In the church's acoustics, changes in registration, dynamic arcs of tension, and the full tonal range of the organ unfold impressively. The conducting of musical ideas, the precise synchronization of voices, and the colorful orchestration of the instrument make the audience's mood an immediate part of the evening.
Free Admission, Donations Welcome
Admission to the concert is free. Donations are requested at the exit. Doors open at 3:30 PM, and the concert starts at 4:00 PM. Those who wish to experience organ music between Baroque mastery, North German tradition, Bach's musical depth, and Romantic sound poetry live will find a special concert date at the Bochum Organ Autumn.
Conclusion
The Masters of the Organ connects significant works of music history with the artistic perspective of Hyeju Jung. Visitors can expect an atmospheric organ concert full of contrasts, depth, and tonal movement. An evening that shows how alive the queen of instruments sounds even in the 21st century.
