MEMENTO ODESA: A musical sign for Odesa in Bochum
On November 21, 2026, the Christuskirche – Church of Cultures in Bochum will transform into a special sound space: Sebastian Studnitzky meets with his band and the Chamber Orchestra of the Odesa Philharmonic conducted by Volodymyr Dykyi. MEMENTO ODESA combines jazz, classical orchestration, and contemporary sound language into an intense homage to the city of Odesa, its inhabitants, and its cultural identity.
Between Jazz, Chamber Music, and Great Emotional Tension
Sebastian Studnitzky works as a trumpeter, pianist, and composer at the intersections of jazz, classical, and electronic music. His musical style thrives on precisely set sound colors, transparent arrangements, and finely tuned dynamics. In MEMENTO ODESA, this sound aesthetic expands through the Chamber Orchestra of the Odesa Philharmonic: string colors, wind lines, and the improvisational energy of the band come together in an extraordinary stage performance.
A Concert with Historical and Cultural Significance
MEMENTO ODESA is seen as a tribute to the Ukrainian port city, its culture, and its will to survive. The program aims to make a musical statement for freedom, cohesion, and the power of cultural memory. The concert evening takes place in the context of the Ukrainian Day of Dignity and Freedom, thereby gaining an additional societal dimension.
Studnitzky: Sound Aesthetician and Award-Winning Musician
The musician, born in 1972, studied trumpet and piano at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts, as well as film music and commercial arranging at the Berklee College of Music. Studnitzky has worked with Nils Landgren, Wolfgang Haffner, Rebekka Bakken, Jazzanova, and Dominic Miller, among others. For his work, he received the ECHO Jazz in 2015 as the national instrumentalist of the year in the brass instruments category. In 2020, he was awarded the Opus Klassik together with Sebastian Manz for A Bernstein Story.
Live Atmosphere in the Christuskirche
The Christuskirche – Church of Cultures provides the fitting setting for a concert where acoustics, light, and audience mood work closely together. The clear church acoustics make fine transitions audible: the warm tone of the trumpet, the rhythmic precision of the band, and the orchestral expanse of the Odesa Chamber Orchestra. Thus, a concert experience arises between focused chamber music, atmospheric jazz, and powerful musical expression.
An Evening for Music, Memory, and Solidarity
Visitors can expect not an ordinary concert evening, but a carefully composed encounter of different musical worlds. MEMENTO ODESA leads from intimate sound detail to a grand orchestral gesture and connects musical quality with a clear message. Anyone who wants to experience jazz, classical crossover, and committed stage art live should not miss this evening in Bochum.
