The Necessary Angel: Debora Antonello's Angels between Visibility and Spirituality
On Friday, November 6, 2026, the exhibition The Necessary Angel by Debora Antonello will open at the Evangelical City Church, Pauluskirche Bochum. The vernissage begins at 6 PM and focuses on an imagery where comfort, protection, vulnerability, and spirituality find a contemporary form.
Angels as Poetic Figures of the Invisible
Debora Antonello brings her angels from her studio in Tuscany into the sacred space of the Pauluskirche. Her works combine engraving, printmaking, and painting. Fine lines meet powerful brushstrokes as bodies, wings, and symbols oscillate between objectivity and spiritual imagination.
The artist, born in 1967 in Cittadella, lives and works in a Romanesque church in Chianti, which she has transformed into a studio. Her work includes drawing, painting, experimental printing techniques, sculpture, installation, and objets d’art. Antonello has exhibited in Italy and internationally, including Japan, and has received several awards for her artistic work.
An Exhibition in Dialogue with the Church Space
The exhibition atmosphere of the Pauluskirche offers a special aesthetic experience. Between architecture, light, and silence, Antonello's angels do not appear as purely religious illustrations but rather as open figures of thought. They refer to the need for orientation, closeness, and inner support.
The examination of the works leads from the visible surface to a symbolic level. Engraved structures, printed traces, and painterly gestures create a fragile yet concentrated visual language. The motif of the angel becomes a transition between heaven and earth, between vulnerability and protection.
Vernissage with Music, Art History, and Italian Hospitality
The opening will be musically accompanied by a piano-saxophone duo. Speeches will be given by Alice Joy Cox, Consul of the Republic of Italy, and Jörg Lukat, Mayor of the City of Bochum. An artistic introduction will be presented by art historian Isabella Amaduzzi.
With this, the vernissage connects contemporary art, cultural education, and international exchange between Germany and Italy. Afterwards, Italian wine and small delicacies invite interaction. The exhibition and accompanying program are created in collaboration with the Pauluskirche Bochum Innenstadt and Rita Marcon, Honorary President of the Association of German-Italian Cultural Societies.
Accompanying Program with Print Workshop and Concerts
In the context of the exhibition, a monotype workshop with Debora Antonello will take place at the Kunstmuseum Bochum on November 5, 2026. Children from eight years and adults can create their own prints with plants and self-developed elements. Other program items include a jazz concert with Jasper van’t Hof, a living room church, a charity concert, and a reading.
Conclusion: An Art Experience between Comfort and Openness
The Necessary Angel promises an intense art experience at a place where art, architecture, and spirituality directly relate to each other. Visitors encounter a multifaceted imagery that keeps questions of protection, hope, and human vulnerability open. The vernissage invites attendees to experience Debora Antonello's angels live and to let the aesthetic experience of her works in the church space affect them.
