Sound that stays: Eternal Sounds at the German Mining Museum Bochum
From July 4, 2026, experience the sound sculpture Eternal Sounds by Moritz Fehr at the German Mining Museum Bochum – an immersive installation about what remains of mining: sounds, vibrations, resonances. Museum admission is enough, and the event experience begins in the light-filled entrance hall.
The atmosphere: Post-mining becomes audible
The rushing of water pumps, the humming of ventilation systems, the buzzing of generators, the percussion of shaft filling – acoustic traces of the so-called eternal tasks merge into a spatial composition. Over 21 precisely positioned speakers carry sounds through the space, condensing, then receding. The audience's mood: focused, curious, with a fine sense for the soft tones.
Artistic signature & curatorial precision
Sound artist Moritz Fehr developed this expansive work specifically for Bochum. Field recordings from the Ruhr area and seismic data form a site-specific composition. The museum's organization and exhibition technology implement the work with high event planning and clean organization – a best-practice example for event management in a research museum.
21 speakers, one large space – your intense listening experience
You move freely, choosing perspective and distance yourself. The sound events change dynamically; each position produces different frequencies, different timbres. Thus, a museum visit becomes a sensual event experience with strong ambiance.
Augmented Reality in the outdoor space
The work expands with a virtual sculpture in the outdoor area. With your smartphone, you activate the AR extension on the lawn in front of the museum – a playful approach that connects target audiences from families to digital natives.
Service: Arrival, times, accessibility
Admission starts at 09:30; ticket sales end at 17:00; last mine tour at 16:00, last tower ride at 17:00. Parking is available around the museum; additionally, on weekends at the Schillerstraße parking garage. The house is largely barrier-free, including designated parking; parts of the viewing mine are accessible.
Conclusion: Eternal Sounds makes the invisible aftereffects of mining audible and tangible. A calm, intense experience – ideal for all who love art, technology history, and sound. Experience the installation live and take your time with the fine details.
