When the Night Becomes a Canvas: Lightpainting in Bochum
On October 17, 2026, the Volkshochschule Bochum invites you to a photographic art experience where light, movement, and long exposure merge into glowing images. In the workshop Lightpainting - Light Painting with Flashlight and Fire, dynamic visual effects are created from controlled camera movements and moving light sources.
Drawing with Light and Photographic Design
Lightpainting combines photographic technique with spontaneous, performative image creation. As dusk casts deep shadows over the surroundings, flashlights and fire become painting tools. With a long exposure time, the camera captures light trails that appear in the finished shot as lines, shapes, or floating light sculptures.
Long Exposure as an Aesthetic Experience
The focus is on playing with exposure time and camera movement as well as the conscious design of light and space. Participants will learn how a seemingly invisible movement can result in a precisely composed image. The art experience combines technical expertise with aesthetic experience, providing an immediate practical access to contemporary light art.
Photo Workshop for Creative Discoveries
The course is aimed at photography enthusiasts who want to use their camera experimentally and explore the possibilities of light painting. A digital camera with adjustable exposure time, a tripod, and a flashlight are required. Course leader Hans-Jürgen Schmiedchen will accompany the artwork review and practical image production in a group of no more than twelve participants.
Meeting Point in Front of the Volkshochschule Bochum
The workshop begins at 7 PM at the meeting point in front of the Volkshochschule at Gustav-Heinemann-Platz 2-6. The event lasts until 10 PM and takes place as a photographic excursion outdoors. Participation costs 26 euros; a discount is possible.
Conclusion: Create Light Art Yourself
This light painting experience makes visible how closely photography, movement, and light art are connected. Those who want to experience the magic of glowing trails, rediscover their own camera, and practically test an unusual photographic technique will find an inspiring evening full of color, form, and movement in Bochum.
