Manifesta 16 Ruhr at the Gethsemane Church Bochum: Contemporary Art Meets Architectural History
On July 9, 2026, the Gethsemane Church Bochum will open its doors as one of the venues of Manifesta 16 Ruhr for an art experience among post-war architecture, social space, and artistic intervention. The Biennale will take place from June 21 to October 4, 2026, throughout the Ruhr area, transforming former and active church spaces into places of dialogue, education, and aesthetic experience.
A Church Space as a Resonating Body for Contemporary Art
The Gethsemane Church, built by Otto Bartning from 1947 to 1950 as a Protestant emergency church, is one of the most impressive sacred buildings of the post-war period in the Ruhr area. Its history is closely linked to reconstruction: From rubble and reused materials, a space emerged that still tells of collective memory, material scarcity, and architectural dignity. In this special exhibition atmosphere, contemporary art unfolds an unusual presence.
Manifesta 16 Ruhr: Art, Neighborhood, and Participation
The Biennale focuses on new site-specific commissions, performances, workshops, and mediation formats. In Bochum, works by Cassidy Toner, Julia Nitschke, Marina Naprushkina, Mehtap Baydu, Miedya Mahmod, Mikołaj Sobczak, Mirosław Bałka, and Zuza Golińska are announced for the Gethsemane Church. The artistic direction for this site is led by Anda Rottenberg and Krzysztof Kosciuczuk. This combines curatorial expertise with a clear focus on social issues, spatial perception, and cultural education.
Education, Mediation, and Open Access
Manifesta 16 Ruhr sees itself not just as an exhibition, but as a platform for exchange. The mediation program invites to Open Walks and Group Walks; school offerings and family-friendly formats are also part of the concept. Admission to Manifesta 16 Ruhr is free, making the visit particularly accessible and strengthening cultural participation. At the same time, all venues are accessible via ramps, although historical church spaces may have structural limitations in certain areas.
A Visit with Architectural Depth
Entering the Gethsemane Church does not offer a neutral White Cube setting, but a space with aura, materiality, and history. The walls made of rubble bricks, the post-war light, and the sacred spatial effect create a dense backdrop for installations and artworks that engage with memory, community, and urban change. This is precisely the strength of this exhibition: It makes visible how art not only occupies a place but makes it readable in new ways.
The Manifesta 16 Ruhr at the Gethsemane Church Bochum promises a multifaceted art experience between the present, architecture, and urban society. Those seeking art as experience, discourse, and encounter should visit this site live and discover the special atmosphere on site themselves.
