Building on the Church: Future Ideas in Christ the King Church
Where once services were celebrated, a space opens for new thoughts, encounters, and societal future. The exhibition Building on the Church – Cultural Center Ruhr invites you to experience the history and atmosphere of Christ the King Church in Bochum from a new perspective.
Architecture Between Faith History and Future
30 architecture graduates from TU Dortmund present their master's theses on the repurposing of five churches in Essen, Bochum, and Wattenscheid. The focus is on the question of how sacred spaces can continue to exist and preserve their identity when their use changes.
Models, Plans, and New Use Ideas
The exhibition showcases plans, models, and visualizations. The designs range from studios under vaults and movement spaces in the nave to libraries, stages, public baths, and walkable data centers. Space proportions, light, materiality, and the history of the churches form the starting point for this architectural exploration.
A Special Exhibition Venue in Bochum
The Christ the King Church has not been used for services since 1998. As a former exhibition and Manifesta location, it connects religious memory, cultural experience, and current architectural culture. Between high spatial volumes, visible materials, and silent architectural traces, a special atmosphere for reflection, conversation, and professional inspiration is created.
Opening Hours and Admission
The exhibition is open from November 7 to December 13, 2026. Visits are possible on Wednesdays from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM, as well as on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is free. The date on November 14, 2026, offers the opportunity to discover the exhibition on Saturday in a calm atmosphere.
This faith experience connects spiritual community, religious experience, and architectural expertise. The focus is not on liturgical celebrations but on the respectful question of how churches as shaping places of memory and as new cultural centers can continue to live on.
Conclusion
Visitors can expect an impressive exhibition about church spaces, remodeling culture, and societal future. Those interested in spirituality, architecture, urban development, and the preservation of religious places will experience an inspiring place of dialogue in Christ the King Church.
