Building on the Church – Future Ideas in the Christ King Church
Where once services were celebrated, a space opens up for new thoughts about community, architecture, and the future of religious places. The exhibition Building on the Church – Cultural House Ruhr invites you to experience sacred spaces in the Christ King Church Bochum with a keen eye, respect, and creative openness.
Church Spaces Between Memory and New Beginnings
The Christ King Church at Steinring becomes the setting for an exhibition that addresses a central question of our time: What happens to churches when their liturgical use ends? The historical space retains its special atmosphere and becomes a place for dialogue, education, art, and social interaction.
Architecture as Lived Responsibility
30 architecture graduates from TU Dortmund present their master's theses. The focus is on five churches in Bochum, Wattenscheid, and Essen, for which new utilization concepts have been developed. The designs address spatial proportions, light incidence, materiality, and the history of the respective buildings.
New Perspectives for Familiar Spaces
Plans, models, and visualizations show how churches can become studios, movement rooms, stages, libraries, public baths, or walk-in data centers. The exhibition follows the principle of continuing to build: existing qualities are preserved, further developed, and connected with new societal needs.
An Experience of Faith Beyond Worship
Even without classical liturgy, the church space remains a place of reflection, memory, and spiritual experience. Between arches, light, and architectural models, a calm atmosphere is created where visitors can reflect on change, responsibility, and a communal future. This experience of faith connects religious experience with architectural cultural expertise.
Opening Hours and Exhibition Duration
The exhibition can be viewed from November 7 to December 13, 2026. Visits are possible on Wednesdays from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is free. The event on November 18, 2026, starts at 3:00 PM.
The cooperative project of Baukultur NRW and the Chair of Massive Building Structures at TU Dortmund makes visible how much future is embedded in church spaces. Visitors can expect an impressive connection of architecture, spirituality, history, and social dialogue.
