Building on the Church: Experience Sacred Spaces Anew
Where once services were held, a space opens up for the future, encounters, and collective reflection. The exhibition Building on the Church – Culture House Ruhr invites visitors to the Christ-König-Kirche Bochum to connect the religious atmosphere of a former church space with new architectural ideas.
Architecture between History and Renewal
30 architecture graduates from TU Dortmund present their master's theses on the repurposing of five churches in the Ruhr area. Plans, models, and visualizations demonstrate how sacred buildings can transform into new venues for art, movement, knowledge, encounters, and community.
When Churches Become Culture Houses
The focus is on how church buildings can preserve their identity while taking on new societal responsibilities. The designs incorporate spatial proportions, light, materials, and the history of the buildings. Proposals include studios under vaulted ceilings, movement spaces, baths, stages, libraries, and walk-in data centers.
A Special Exhibition Venue in Bochum
The Christ-König-Kirche has not been used for services since 1998. As a former exhibition and Manifesta venue, it stands as an example of the transformation of church spaces. Its unique atmosphere makes the exhibition a remarkable religious and cultural experience.
