Building the Church – Future Highlights in a Special Sacred Space
Where church services were once held, a space for new questions, encounters, and social visions is being created. The exhibition Building the Church – Culture House Ruhr invites visitors to the Christ King Church in Bochum to reflect on the future of church buildings and their significance for the community.
Architecture between Faith, History, and Change
30 architecture graduates from TU Dortmund present plans, models, and visualizations for the repurposing of five churches in Bochum, Wattenscheid, and Essen. The focus is on the idea of continuing to build: Existing spatial proportions, light conditions, materials, and the history of the sacred buildings serve as the starting point for new uses.
New Spaces for Encounter and Community
The designs demonstrate how church spaces can become studios, movement spaces, stages, libraries, baths, or walkable data centers. The unique atmosphere of the church space remains an important reference point. The exhibition combines architectural expertise with a spiritual experience of silence, spaciousness, and memory.
The Christ King Church as an Exhibition Venue
The Christ King Church itself has not been used for church services since 1998. After previous uses as an exhibition site and Manifesta location, it is now the stage for a dialogue about churches, culture, and the common good. Visitors experience a religious experience in a broader sense: The familiar sacred space opens up to questions of identity, transformation, and social responsibility.
Opening Hours and Exhibition Experience
On Wednesday, December 9, 2026, the exhibition is open from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Admission is free. Visitors can immerse themselves in the concepts in a calm atmosphere and discover how architecture, spirituality, and social development remain interconnected.
The exhibition is aimed at architecture enthusiasts, believers, cultural creators, and all those interested in the future of church spaces. Experience the exhibition live and gain new perspectives on sacred architecture, community, and the power of continuing to build.
