Building the Church Further: Rediscovering Sacred Spaces
Where services were once celebrated, a space opens up for the future, encounters, and new social ideas. The exhibition Building the Church Further – Culture House Ruhr invites visitors to the Christ-König Church in Bochum to reflect on the significance of church spaces and their possible development.
Architecture between Memory and Renewal
In the special atmosphere of the Christ-König Church, visitors experience plans, models, and visualizations from 30 architecture graduates of TU Dortmund. The exhibition explores how church buildings can become new places for art, movement, knowledge, and community after the end of their liturgical use.
New Perspectives on Familiar Church Spaces
The presented master's theses focus on five churches in Essen, Bochum, and Wattenscheid. Central themes include existing spatial proportions, light incidence, materiality, and the history of the buildings. This leads to designs for studios under arches, movement spaces in the nave, baths, stages, libraries, and walk-in data centers.
Building Further as a Sign of Social Responsibility
The concept of construction culture understands transformation not as loss but as active architectural development. The exhibition shows how new uses can be integrated into existing sacred buildings without losing their identity and special atmosphere. Thus, the church becomes a space for spirituality, urban community, memory, and future.
Admission and Visit
The exhibition is open on Wednesday, December 2, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Admission is free.
