Building the Church Further: Discovering the Future in Historical Spaces
Where once services were held, a new space for dialogue, architecture, and societal ideas is emerging. The exhibition Building the Church Further – Culture House Ruhr invites visitors to the Christ-King Church Bochum to view sacred spaces with new eyes and reflect on their significance for the future.
Architecture between Faith, Memory, and New Beginnings
The focus is on the master's projects of 30 architecture graduates from TU Dortmund. Their designs address five churches in Essen, Bochum, and Wattenscheid, which are no longer or will no longer be used for services. The exhibition combines architectural expertise with a deep engagement with spirituality, local history, and social change.
New Perspectives on Familiar Church Spaces
Plans, models, and visualizations demonstrate how existing churches can transform into new places for movement, art, knowledge, and interaction. The ideas range from studios under vaults and movement spaces in the nave to libraries, stages, baths, and walk-in data centers. The starting point remains the dimensions, light, materials, and unique atmosphere of each individual structure.
The Christ-King Church as an Exhibition Venue
The Christ-King Church itself has a unique history of use. Since 1998, no services have taken place there. As a former sacred space, exhibition venue, and site for cultural projects, it vividly illustrates how religious architecture can evolve without losing its identity and history.
Exhibition on Saturday, December 12, 2026
On Saturday, December 12, 2026, the exhibition will be open from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is free. Visitors can expect an inspiring faith experience in a broader sense: a quiet, concentrated atmosphere, architectural visions, and a shared reflection on the role that church buildings will play in the city and society in the future.
Conclusion: Building the Church Further – Culture House Ruhr connects building culture, theology, memory, and future questions in an impressive church space. Those interested in architecture, religious sites, and new forms of social community will experience the exhibition best in person at the Christ-King Church Bochum.
