The Last Summer: Between Holiday Idyl and Political Storm
In the Kammerspiele of Schauspielhaus Bochum, summery lightness meets the unrest of a society whose political climate is becoming noticeably harsher. The Last Summer is freely adapted from Kurt Tucholsky's Castle Gripsholm and combines cheerful holiday moments with a keen awareness of the present.
Sun, Lake, and a Deceptive Idyl
Mariefred in Sweden: Couples enjoy their break, lying on green meadows, rowing across the lake, and leaving the news world behind for a moment. The production by Mathias Spaan immerses the audience in this seemingly carefree atmosphere, where bodies, closeness, and zest for life set the pace.
When Reality Intrudes on Vacation
However, the idyl remains fragile. A sadistic headmistress brings disaster to the holiday world, while far-right parties celebrate election victories at home, and the societal tone becomes rougher. The theater evening creates a tension-filled contrast between private relaxation and political reality.
Precise Acting and Live Music
Konstantin Bühler, Linde Dercon, and Payam Yazdani bring the characters to life in a production that shifts between comedy, desire, and threat. Live music by Tom Gatza adds an additional sonic layer to the stage performance. The stage and costumes are designed by Anna Armann and Paula de la Haye.
A Theater Evening with Resonance
The Last Summer connects Tucholsky's literary source with a contemporary political perspective. The audience can expect a play that oscillates between holiday feelings and societal readiness for alarm, between warm summer colors and the dark cracks of the present. Those who wish to experience theater as an emotional concert of spoken word, as precise acting, and as immediate audience mood will find an evening of particular tension here.
