I was physically assaulted by the municipal caretaker after work. He was illegally using the municipal security cameras to spy on his ex-wife and later on me. He later claimed to the police that I had racially insulted him. Thankfully, there were witnesses who could prove otherwise. Even more concerning, however, is that the man is still employed there. No action is being taken.

Contrary to some previous comments, I would like to emphasize that no one in the synagogue and Jewish community of Gelsenkirchen is "unfriendly." Quite the contrary. There is also no "oppressive" atmosphere. I have taken guided tours here with my students, attended Jewish services, and a few years ago participated in a wonderful and musically accomplished choir project, culminating in a performance of our Israeli and Yiddish songs. I have seen and heard many interesting things in this place and thoroughly enjoyed authentic music under competent choral direction. I would gladly return anytime, and if there is ever another opportunity to sing in a Jewish choir in Gelsenkirchen, I will be there immediately, thinking also of my Jewish great-grandmother Zsuzsanna Rothermel from Hungary. I can wholeheartedly recommend a visit to, and contact with, the friendly Jewish community and synagogue in Gelsenkirchen to everyone.

That a reviewer would provocatively state, "One should be welcome in houses of worship, but unfortunately not here," is incomprehensible. For many years, I have regularly attended courses, choir rehearsals, lectures, and celebrations at the synagogue. They are always happy to welcome visitors and guests. However, advance registration is often required, which likely reflects security concerns during these uncertain times.

One should be welcome in places of worship, but unfortunately not here. They wanted to get rid of us, even though we meant well and wanted to inform ourselves...
