Oval Office Bar | Bochum & Program
The Oval Office Bar in Bochum is much more than a classic bar name on a location list. It is a queer basement bar in the Schauspielhaus Bochum, a collectively organized place for encounters, discussions, music, and performance, and at the same time a space where gastronomy, art, and community consciously connect. The supporting association KosmoPolis e.V. describes the bar as a solidarity-based, non-commercial place for queer nightlife, operated in cooperation with the Schauspielhaus Bochum. The entrance is located on the left side of the Schauspielhaus at Saladin-Schmitt-Straße 2, right in the middle of a cultural environment that has played a special role in Bochum for years. Therefore, those who visit the Oval Office Bar do not experience an anonymous standard bar, but a place with attitude, history, and program. Opening hours, formats, and atmosphere are closely linked: The bar officially opens mainly from Thursday to Saturday at 7 PM, but the program varies depending on the event and season. This mixture of a reliable core and changing cultural practice is what makes the location appealing. For SEO, the Oval Office Bar is particularly relevant for search queries related to Bochum, queer bar, opening hours, directions, program, and accessibility information. At the same time, the location clearly shows that modern event venues today do not only function through their drink or stage offerings but also through their social positioning, accessibility, and social embedding in the city. Opening Hours, Admission, and Tickets
At the Oval Office Bar, many visitors first look for the opening hours, and here the official communication is pleasantly clear. The core opening hours are Thursday to Saturday from 7:00 PM to 12:00 AM. It is also noted that times may change depending on the program, such as on special evenings, collaborations, or guest performances. For practical planning, this means: Those visiting the Oval Office Bar should not only keep an eye on the time but also check the current schedule in advance. This is particularly important because the bar does not operate as a static counter service but is regularly shaped by events that can change the flow. Additionally, there is a visiting model that consciously differs from many other locations. According to the bar, admission is never charged during bar operations, and drinks operate on a donation basis, meaning according to the solidarity principle. This means: Each person pays what they can and want. For events in the Oval Office within the Schauspielhaus system, the regular ticket routes via box office, webshop, and theater box office apply. The pay-what-you-want principle is also explicitly mentioned there. For search queries related to tickets, box office, evening box office, and booking, this is important because the Oval Office Bar is not exclusively a classic bar but also part of a venue where the boundary between theater evening and bar evening is consciously kept open. Therefore, those searching for Oval Office Bar tickets should distinguish between free bar operations, pay-what-you-want-oriented formats, and regular advance sale routes. This differentiation is helpful for visitors and also relevant for search engine optimization because it accurately reflects the actual usage logic of the location. Directions, Entrance, and Parking at Schauspielhaus Bochum
The journey to the Oval Office Bar is closely linked to the Schauspielhaus Bochum, which provides a practical advantage for many guests. The official address for the entrance door is Saladin-Schmitt-Straße 2, 44789 Bochum; the entrance of the bar is located on the left side of the Schauspielhaus. For public transport, the Schauspielhaus mentions the stop Schauspielhaus with tram lines 308 and 318 as well as bus lines SB37, 350, 353, 365, and the night express NE4. Additionally, the Bochum-Ehrenfeld S-Bahn station with the S1 is a good option, from there the walking distance is about ten minutes. Also worth mentioning is the U35 stop Oskar-Hoffmann-Straße, which is also about ten minutes away. Those arriving by car can access the P9 parking garage at the Schauspielhaus via Königsallee; according to the official service page, the theater rate applies there during performances, and prepayment at the machine can reduce waiting times after the event. For visitors searching for parking, directions, and entrance, it is also important that the route leads via Königsallee and that one should keep the location of the Schauspielhaus in mind for orientation. The Oval Office Bar is thus centrally located, but not in a typical street bar logic, but in a cultural building with several performance and event areas. This makes a precise direction description necessary: Those who know the entrance door, understand the stops, and have the P9 parking garage in mind will arrive much more relaxed. For local SEO, this combination of address, public transport, parking, and building access is particularly valuable because it directly answers the most common user searches for bar Bochum, directions, and parking space. Accessibility and Practical Information
A particularly important topic at the Oval Office Bar is accessibility, and here the official information openly states what is possible on-site and what is not. Unfortunately, the bar is not accessible. There is a step in front of the entrance, followed by a staircase with 14 steps down to the bar. The toilets are also not accessible. At the same time, important details are transparently named: The entrance door is wide, there are handrails, different seating options inside, and an outdoor area that is accessible at ground level. Furthermore, the bar is intended for people aged 18 and over; only for selected formats, such as readings for children or events at other times, different age rules apply. For guests with support needs, it is also helpful that the team can be reached by email or via Instagram and offers assistance as far as possible. According to the official information, several disabled parking spaces are available in the vicinity, including in the P9 parking garage, on the parking side strip Königsallee/corner Hubertusstraße, and at the corner of Theatervorplatz/Oskar-Hoffmann-Straße. Additionally, the service page of the Schauspielhaus describes that efforts are being made to improve access options in collaboration with politics and the city administration. For visitors searching for accessibility, wheelchair access, disabled parking, or access, this openness is crucial because it creates real planning security. Especially in the event sector, transparency is more important than blanket advertising promises: Those who know that there are steps can decide early on whether assistance, alternative routes, or inquiries are sensible. For SEO planning, this means that accessibility is one of the central themes of the location and should therefore not be missing in texts, FAQs, and meta information. ([kosmopolis.club](https://kosmopolis.club/barrieren/?utm_source=openai))
Program, Formats, and Regular Meetings
The program of the Oval Office Bar is so interesting because it cannot be reduced to a single type of event. On the official website and in the schedule of the Schauspielhaus, there are concerts, concert performances, readings, talks, guest performances, performances, workshops, and parties. This diversity is no coincidence but part of the concept: The bar sees itself as a lively cultural place where conversation, music, activism, and artistic practice can coexist. This is particularly evident in recurring formats such as the Queer Endometriosis Counter, which has existed since 2022 and takes place every third Thursday of the month. There is also the introductory meeting, which is organized about every one to two months and introduces new interested parties to the collectively organized work in the bar. Not only is work done behind the counter, but the program is also planned together. This is particularly relevant for search terms related to Oval Office Bar program, events, queer Bochum, and FLINTA* because real recurring structures exist here and not just individual events. In the current schedules of the Schauspielhaus, various formats also appear in the Oval Office, from guest performances to music evenings to discussion formats and stage projects. This shows: The bar is not only a social meeting point but also part of a flexible event system in the house. For visitors, this means that the current calendar is always more important than a rigid monthly program. Those looking for a specific format should check the pages of KosmoPolis and Schauspielhaus, as dates, start times, and ticket modalities may change depending on the production. This mixture of regularity and openness makes the location in Bochum unique and ensures that it remains attractive to a wide range of target groups: from queer community evenings to political discussions to artistic experiments and concerts. ([kosmopolis.club](https://kosmopolis.club/endometriose?utm_source=openai))
History: From Theater Unten to the Oval Office Bar
The history of the Oval Office Bar is closely linked to the history of the space in the Schauspielhaus. According to the official materials, the place was opened in 1972 by director Peter Zadek as Theater Unten. At that time, it was the smallest performance venue in the house, with 99 seats in the basement of the Schauspielhaus. Over the decades, the space has been renamed and repurposed several times, including as ZadEck and as Theater unter Tage. In 2002, the space was technically updated and subsequently served for theater productions, small guest performances, readings, concerts, and club nights. With the start of the 2018/2019 season, the place was named Oval Office and became a versatile exhibition space for international contemporary art, particularly film, video, digital, as well as space and light art. The exhibition area at that time also included the Oval Office Bar, which is mentioned in the materials as the successor to the Eve Bar. Later, the space evolved again: In the 2022/2023 season, the Oval Office was described as a place for new artistic events where playing, dancing, experimenting, and discussing take place. This is particularly relevant for search queries related to history, background, and special features because the location thus has a real development history and does not only function as a current restaurant or club address. Today's Oval Office Bar stands on multiple layers of cultural use: theater space, exhibition venue, experimental stage, and queer-organized bar operation. This historical depth makes the place credible and clearly distinguishes it from short-term pop-up concepts. Therefore, when visiting the bar, one does not simply enter a counter but a space that connects Bochum's cultural history with the present, activism, and community work. ([schauspielhausbochum.de](https://www.schauspielhausbochum.de/d/files/Presseinformation_Dust_Orbis_Lumen.pdf))
Queer Night Culture, Solidarity Principle, and Community
The actual profile of the Oval Office Bar becomes visible through its sponsorship and its attitude. KosmoPolis e.V. describes itself as an association for the promotion of queer nightlife and operates the bar in cooperation with the Schauspielhaus Bochum. The official self-presentation emphasizes that it is a solidarity-based, non-commercial place, a basement bar with a stage, and a space where alternative forms of togetherness are experimented with. The solidarity principle is particularly important: Each person pays what they can and want. This social logic shapes not only the bar operation but also the self-understanding of the location as a place for women, trans people, queer individuals, and supportive allies. In the official texts, the bar is described as an important hub for the regional queer-feminist community. This is central for the SEO analysis because search queries for queer bar Bochum, FLINTA* space, solidarity place, or community location are precisely seeking this identity. Furthermore, the official texts show that the bar is collectively organized: program planning, shift planning, and co-design are carried out collectively, and regular plenums and meetings are part of the structure. This openness is also visible in the external presentation, such as through exchanges with social and cultural initiatives, invitations to new members, and the presence of current information on the website and social media. Those looking for photos, current impressions, or a sense of the atmosphere can find a good first overview on the website, in the bar's social media channels, and in the press area of the Schauspielhaus. Overall, this creates the image of a place that not only sells drinks but also builds social infrastructure for the city. This is precisely why the Oval Office Bar in Bochum is such a strong topic for local SEO: it unites cultural venue, bar, queer community, and social stance in a clearly located address.
We ended up there spontaneously for the first time, not knowing what to expect. And we were pleasantly surprised. The pieces we've seen since then have been diverse, just like the artists themselves. If you're open to new experiences, you've definitely found a place where you can and want to collect these impressions.

I want to rate this bar independently of the program I saw there yesterday. The bar, located in the basement of the theater, is very alternative left and therefore obviously not for everyone. You pay as much as you want for the beer. There are two toilets, but they have no signs, so you can choose one. This regularly causes confusion: most women go in on the left (toilets), men on the right (urinals + toilets). The service is very nice, and sometimes music plays.

Love this place! A leftist, queer feminist, cosmopolitan bar where especially queers and FLINTA*s can feel comfortable and safe! The bar operates on a pay-what-you-want principle, so there are no fixed prices, just donation recommendations. Sometimes there are awesome parties and a dance floor, sometimes just relaxed gatherings, but always a good vibe! For me, one of the biggest feel-good factors is that there are no gender-segregated toilets in the bar. There's one toilet with sit-down toilets and one with sit-down toilets and urinals, but it doesn't matter who goes where!
