Rotunde Bochum | Program & Tickets
The Rotunde Bochum is one of the most distinctive cultural venues in the Ruhr area: a versatile event location in the historic building of the former Bochum main train station, just a few minutes' walk from the current train station and the Bermuda3Eck. Those looking for concerts with club energy, club nights with a scene profile, exhibitions, readings, and festivals in an urban industrial setting will find a home here. The centerpiece is the circular entrance hall with skylight, which gave the place its name, flanked by a large hall, workshop rooms, and a green beer garden. Musically, the spectrum ranges from house, techno, drum and bass, and reggae to indie, folk, metal, and alternative. Many formats take place on up to two floors, complemented by creative special events. Due to its central location in the Viktoria creative quarter, access is quick and uncomplicated, with parking garages around the corner. Flexible capacities from small sessions to large parties make the Rotunde attractive for organizers and audiences. Programs, tickets, directions, and all details can be comfortably checked online, with the box office deciding at short notice. Those who don't want to miss anything can subscribe to the newsletter and stay informed about highlights, festival series, and special dates.
Program and current events at the Rotunde Bochum
The current program is the most important search for visitors. In the Rotunde, urban club cultures and concert worlds beat to the same rhythm: electronic nights with house, techno, drum and bass, or reggae alternate with guitar evenings from indie, folk, metal, and alternative. Additionally, there are readings, comedy, and poetry, exhibitions, conferences of the creative industry, and thematic festivals. Series and guest formats repeatedly shape the monthly picture, resulting in over 20 events per month. Club nights can take place on two possible floors, allowing for variations in sound aesthetics and moods. Those specifically looking for today should check the event list for the current month. There, door times, genres, notes on photo or age rules for the respective night, and whether a floor change is planned are listed. For concerts, start times, advance ticket sales information, and details on whether standing or limited seating is available can be found. Popular special events at the Rotunde have included the wine festival 'Weine vor Freude', international puppet theater as part of Fidena, costume balls, and discussion formats with prominent guests. Such highlights often lead to early demand, so it's worth checking upcoming dates and signing up for the newsletter. This informs in good time about line-ups, presale starts, running orders, and possible additional shows. Since many evenings are curated by different local and regional organizers, processes and advance ticket sales channels vary by event; the central program page reliably leads to details. For spontaneous visitors, checking in the evening on the event day is advisable, as last-minute tickets may be available at the box office. Those traveling in a group should also check if there are entry windows to ensure everyone can enter the hall together. Tip: The beer garden opens earlier in good weather and is ideal as a meeting point before the first act or the start on the main floor.
Tickets, box office, and booking
Ticketing at the Rotunde follows a transparent logic: For regular club nights and many standard events, the box office on-site is sufficient. This allows for spontaneous visits without pre-sale stress. For larger concerts, comedy nights, festivals, or special shows, the respective organizers additionally use advance sales systems and the Bochum Tourist Info as a contact point. Those planning long-term or coordinating travel from the surrounding area should secure tickets in advance, especially if a show with internationally sought-after acts is announced. The central event overview leads directly to the respective booking option. For formats that are typically sold out, subscribing to the newsletter early is worthwhile to not miss the start of advance sales. When visiting on the same day, the box office times follow the event details, usually opening before the show or at the start of the night. Payment methods vary by event; usually, cash and common digital options are accepted, with exact details provided for each event. Discounted offers occasionally appear for students and young visitors, depending on the organizer. Those planning a group celebration or corporate visit can also rent the Rotunde exclusively; various rooms are available, from an intimate workshop for 20 people to a club night with several hundred guests. The rental page consolidates contacts for event management and connects you with technical equipment and catering partners if needed. Since there are large events in the city on some dates, early planning is advisable to avoid bottlenecks in travel or parking. It is also important to check the event description: There you will find possible entry restrictions, such as whether entry is guaranteed only until a certain time, and practical information about cloakroom, photo policy, and schedule.
Directions and parking at the Rotunde Bochum
The Rotunde is excellently connected to traffic. From Bochum main train station, a short walk of about ten minutes leads through the city center towards the Viktoria creative quarter. Those choosing the route through the Bermuda3Eck will already experience the lively gastronomy and nightlife mile along the way. Alternatively, you can take tram lines 308 or 318 to the Bermuda3Eck/Musikforum stop and reach the location in just a few minutes on foot. For those traveling by car, the city's parking guidance system is recommended; several parking garages are located nearby. Particularly convenient are P8 Konrad-Adenauer-Platz/Bermuda3Eck, P6 Hauptbahnhof (Buddenbergplatz), and P5 Brückstraße. These garages are designed for evening city traffic, are well signposted, and are quickly accessible on foot. The Bochum Economic Development Portal shows real-time occupancy, which is helpful for highly demanded dates. If traveling by car, it is best to plan some buffer time, especially on weekends or when home games or major events are taking place in the city. There are numerous bicycle parking options in the city center along the routes from the train station towards the Rotunde. Guests who prefer barrier-free paths usually choose routes over the wider city axes and the squares around the Bermuda3Eck. Taxis and ride services can be ordered around the main train station or at the major ring roads; pick-up after the event is generally easiest there. Those coming from the Ruhr area by train benefit from the dense schedule between Essen, Dortmund, Herne, and Bochum. Due to its central location, the Rotunde can be easily combined with dinner in the district before heading to the floor. For late-night journeys home, it's worth checking the night line schedules or the return times of the S-Bahn in advance to ensure a relaxed end to the evening.
Capacities, rooms, and equipment in the former main train station
The building of the Rotunde is located in the former reception area of the historic main train station and offers variable rooms for very different formats. The large hall, the central place for legendary parties, DJ sets, and concerts, accommodates up to 300 people without seating. It is also suitable for conferences, company meetings, or workshops when an open, flexible space is needed. The foyer is the namesake Rotunde with a circular skylight. Here, about 130 people are possible; the atmosphere with natural stone, brick, and urban details creates a special play of light. Under a large disco ball, the foyer becomes an intimate club space or a reception area for concerts. A dedicated cloakroom facilitates the process in the entrance area, and direct access leads to the beer garden. This offers up to 70 seats and becomes a meeting point before shows in good weather, but also a retreat during club nights. Two additional workshop rooms are available as flexible working and breakout spaces; seated, they can accommodate up to 40 people each. In total, the location allows events between 20 and 600 people, depending on room combination and setup. For technical requirements, an experienced partner is available, tailoring sound, lighting, video, and presentation to the respective format. From simple microphones to DJ setups to live streaming, many things can be realized. Catering is organized through trusted partners from the region, including classic full-service providers and concepts with vegetarian and vegan focuses. This allows buffets, finger food, or drink stations to be quickly adapted to target groups. This modular structure makes the Rotunde equally attractive for subculture, university communities, creative industry events, private celebrations, and companies. For organizers, this means short distances: A central contact coordinates rooms, technology, catering, and processes, keeping the program and audience in focus.
History of the Rotunde: From Catholic Day Station to Cultural Venue
The current Rotunde is a piece of living urban and architectural history. After the destruction of the old main train station in World War II, a provisional station was built in 1949 on the occasion of the German Catholic Day. This interim solution consisted of a simple brick building with a distinctive round skylight above the entrance hall, which later gave the building its name. During the Catholic Day, hundreds of thousands traveled; dozens of special trains made the facility a logistical hub. Until the opening of the new main train station in 1957, the ensemble served as the city's central train station. After that, the Deutsche Bundesbahn used the building for decades as a training center before it stood empty in the 1990s. In 2001, the building was placed under monument protection. From the idea of reclaiming the place for culture, the current use emerged: From 2010, the historic building became a cultural meeting point and event venue, and in 2017, it reopened after renovation with a newly designed garden area and the stage under the circular skylight. Since then, the Rotunde has linked Bochum's industrial past with a vibrant contemporary culture. The location between Bermuda3Eck and Ehrenfeld, in the Viktoria creative quarter, makes it a link between gastronomy, off-scene, and established cultural addresses in the city center. Renowned bands, international and local acts, as well as unusual festival formats have left their mark here since the reopening. At the same time, there is room for experiments: from niche music to new forms of electronic club music, from political cabaret to poetry and readings. This mix of monument, scene, and openness is the core of the Rotunde brand and explains why the place radiates far beyond the city limits for Bochum and the Ruhr area.
Seating and hall plan: How Bochum sits and stands
Those looking for a seating plan want to know where the best view or the most pleasant sound can be expected. In the Rotunde, there is no fixed, permanently published seating plan, as setup and seating change depending on the event. For club nights and many concerts, a standing configuration applies, with proximity to the stage or DJ booth primarily being a matter of early arrival and desired sound experience. In practice, it has proven effective to orient oneself at the FOH, i.e., the sound technology; there, the sound is usually balanced. For seated special formats, such as readings, comedy, or conferences, the respective organizers individually determine the seating. This can be row seating, mixed forms with standing areas, or table concepts in workshop setups. The event description provides information on whether and how seats are assigned. In the foyer with its skylight, standing and lounge areas are usually sensible, while the large hall offers the greatest variability, from dense standing in front of the stage to loose seating. The beer garden is equipped with seating and serves as a quiet retreat or meeting point between program points. Those who prefer a specific position at concerts choose different zones depending on the genre: closer to the stage for direct energy, side areas for more freedom of movement, and rear zones for overall sound and overview. On sold-out evenings, arriving early is helpful to secure desired spots in the standing area. Visitors who prefer to sit should pay attention to notes such as seated, free seating, or numbered seats in the event description. If a special layout is used, organizers will communicate this in advance. The flexible room logic of the Rotunde is an advantage: it allows for exactly the atmosphere that a night or concert needs, rather than forcing the audience into rigid grids. This way, each event remains independent and experience-oriented.

We went to the semester start party and got our tickets from the website. It mentioned 'welcome shots and neon armbands' but when we asked about them, they said there was a mistake and that doesn’t exist. Very disappointing. Also, I just don’t get the extra booking fee. Feels like a scam, just put the included price instead.

I've been around for the RuhrJS Conference 2018 and found the location to be surprisingly fitting for the Ruhr Area. The stone walls and interior design fit together beautifully. Given the sun is in the right angle to the huge disco-ball, it sprinkles the bar with light which really looks amazing. Only downside was that it got really hot and somewhat stuffy in there with all the people in there, but that might be different for other events. All in all really a comfy place to be. (I guess our buffet was made by their staff as well so yeah, the food was good too.)

Such a lovely place for techno lovers! Great bar, friendly staff, two floors. They have a lovely garden outside with a lovely fireplace. Was such a magical night for me as I sat there cozy by the fireplace while it was snowing.

Rotunde is a bar, a restaurant, and a club altogether. The bar area is quite nice, perfect to organize a quiet get-together. The restaurant is perhaps a bit pricey for what it is, although the food is good. In summer it's very nice to sit outside when it's sunny. In the club there are sometimes quality concerts and some interesting parties, also sometimes flea markets are organized there.
