The exit from coal is occurring gradually. While no hard coal has been mined in Germany since 2018, its import is in full swing: it is still needed for the production of electricity and steel. With his photographs, Khalil Noé Döring documents the path of coal from the Dutch coast to the Ruhr area. At the end of 2022, he visited the coal storage facilities in Europoort in Rotterdam, traveled on a coal and ore freighter over the Waal and the Rhine to Duisburg, and subsequently took a look behind the scenes of the coking plant, blast furnace, and steelworks in Duisburg. The focus of Khalil Döring's intense photographs is on the people and their working environments, thus highlighting a working world that has undergone significant changes for decades and will continue to change in the foreseeable future.
