The phase-out of coal is happening gradually. While no hard coal has been mined in Germany since 2018, its import is running at full speed: it is still needed for the production of electricity and steel. With his photos, Khalil Noé Döring documents the path of coal from the Dutch coast to the Ruhr area. At the end of 2022, he visited the coal depots in Europoort in Rotterdam, traveled on a coal and ore freighter over the Waal and the Rhine to Duisburg, and then took a look behind the scenes of coking plants, blast furnaces, and steelworks in Duisburg. The focus of Khalil Döring's intense photographs is on the people and their working environments, thus depicting a work environment that has been undergoing significant changes for decades and will continue to change in the foreseeable future.
